Following a number of ad hoc gatherings of former members of No. 249 (Gold Coast) Squadron, the Association was founded in 1983 under the patronage of MRAF Sir John Grandy GCB GCVO KBE DSO and with Wing Commander (Laddie) Lucas DFC as Chairman.

Air Marshal Sir John Sutton KCB accepted the Presidency of the Association in 1995 and Wing Commander Lucas became Vice-President until, sadly, he passed away in 1999. Sir John Grandy passed away on 3 January 2004 , aged 90, and so we now have neither Patron nor Chairman.

Sqn. Ldr. Dennis (Mac) McCaig held the roles of both Hon. Secretary and Hon. Treasurer from 1983 until handing over to Terry Gill (2000 - 2010); as from September 2011 Tommy Cullen holds the posts, Terry Gill is Chairman of the Association.

The Association remains an informal organisation open to all those who served with the Squadron at any time during its existence, together with a number of aviation enthusiasts as associate members. Continuance of the friendship and goodwill developed in service with the Squadron is fostered by occasional reunion gatherings of the Association; by meetings of specific interest groups from time to time; and by the issue of occasional newsletters.

Being informal, there is no formal constitution. Membership costs £18.00 - £20.00 for an overseas membership - for life and this includes the cost of a Squadron tie. Anyone wishing to join should contact the Hon. Secretary / Treasurer:

249 (Gold Coast) Squadron Association

As at December, 2009, the Association funds total about £600 and are primarily used for photocopying and mailing costs for an annual newsletter and reunion notices, together with the purchase of items for resale to members.

At present, we have 229 members and associate members, together with 11 widow and daughter associates, and No 249 ATC Squadron.
